THE TRIBUTE IN LIGHT MEMORIAL

The Tribute in Light memorial was first launched on March 11th, to memorialize the six-month anniversary of the World Trade Center disaster and to both honor those lost on September 11th and celebrate the spirit of all the New Yorkers who had worked to rebuild and restore the City in that terrible time.

The two enormous beams of light were generated by twin arrays of fourtyfour xenon spot lights that radiated from a site one block north of Ground Zero into the night skyThis public artwork was subsequently selected to become a permanent addition to the WTC Memorial and is now annually illuminated on the week of September 11th.

The creative team behind the Tribute in Light Initiative consisted of Artists; Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda, Architects; John Bennett, Gustavo Bonevardi and Richard Nash Gould, and Lighting Designer: Paul Marantz.

The principle production support for the launch of this iniative was provided by two non-profit arts and cultural institutions; Creative Time & The Municipal Art Society. (For further credits see links below)

The first conceptual image of the Tribute In light, was rendered by Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda and appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine, on September 23rd, 2001. This image sparked the inspiration to launch the Towers of Light Initiative, later re-titled The Tribute in Light. All of their artist renderings were created on behalf of the T.O.L. Initiative, and served as the principle conceptual designs and preliminary plans, to help concerned citizens and members of New York city government pre-visualize and grasp the emotional impact and phenomenalogical effects that it was believed this ephemeral Public Art work and light memorial would offer.

Care Packages for the 21st Century

Popular Science Design Challenge

 COMMUNITY:
Citizens of major metropolitan areas increasingly entombed within the sodium haze of artificial lights and other atmospheric pollutants.

 NEED:
The fog of artificial, urban lights too often contracts ones focus to close range effects. Rather than looking out and above—both literally and metaphorically—the 21st Century urbanite becomes alienated and distanced from the primary source that has provided humanity with an orientation point for millennia: the ancient starlight of the celestial vault. With seemingly irreversible and ever-expanding urban sprawl, and the resulting cultural malaise, city dwellers are in danger of losing sight of any lodestar to inspire galactic awe and wonder, and recapture a sense of the beyond.

CARE PACKAGE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY:

We propose to launch a low orbit, geo-stationary satellite directly above our chosen city, Manhattan. Using a deployable, expanding design of reflectors and lenses, this satellite will redirect energy from the sun, and be sufficiently bright to cut through typical urban atmospheric conditions. Intermittent green emanations will serve to differentiate the Urban Lodestar from other, natural celestial bodies.

Green lights and lanterns are universally recognized as signifiers for safe passage, and the affirmation or commencement of a voyage.

Visible by day and night, the Urban Lodestar will gently pulsate in tempo with the heartbeat of one who is deeply at rest, and so provide a calming, rhythmical index to combat the stress and anxiety so often attendant with urban centers in the 21st Century.

TECHNOLOGICAL CONSULTANTS:

LOST CORNERSTONE

Lost Cornerstone Installation, Lehmann Maupin Gallery, 2004

This Kinetic eagle/ wreaking ball was a tribute to the last existing cornerstone eagle removed from the facade of the original NYC Pennsylvania Station, it was suspended at a the end of a spinning crane arm that swung the eagle in 30 ft. diameter loops. This artificial artifact is hung in effigy as the stubborn survivor of the ideological conflict between Empire-style Neo-Classicism and International Style Modernism, a prognosis for the historic delirium and amnestic nature of twenty-first century American culture.

This project was constructed of steel, urethane, styrene, and motors. Eagle: 60” x 60”x 68”.

Prime Mover 2008
Prime Mover 2008

Prime Mover - In Aristotelian philosophy, the self-moved being that causes all motion.

Ancient Egyptian obelisks are agents of culture and history, endowed with sacred spiritual meaning and designed to transcend time. However, these agents were recognized – and debased - by the West to be trade-worthy objects of history -- objects that can be measured, crated, bought and sold. Although the arcane obelisks are priceless -- and invaluable -- in their own culture, they were merely worth their weight in silver when traded to young countries like nineteenth century America. Trade deals of this nature demonstrate why the US suffered a virtual history deficit. Plundered ancient artifacts are Trojan Horses -- iconic forms that harbor a dangerous instinctual quest for power and immortality, and ultimately superficialize the plunderer. The actual value of this agent of history is culture-, time- and site-specific and no Prime Mover other than its own self can convey its true meaning.

IMPERIAL DRAGSTERS

Imperial Dragsters , Lehman Maupin Gallery, 2004

A sardonic triumvirate of Imperial Dragsters form a militant team of nationalistic, candy-colored stock cars, customized from the combined forms of Visconti’s 1861 Tomb for Napoleon Bonaparte and the infamous Lamborghini LM002, the first luxury proto-military SUV.
The triptych composes a consumer culture critique and social political puzzle. Like visiting a perversely national memorial in a psychedelic casket show room.

LANTERN SHUTTLECOCK

Lantern Shuttlecock 2003, Lehman Maupin Gallery, NYC

EverGreene Gallery, Geneva Switzesrland

Lantern Shuttlecock / Black Mihrab:

Shuttlecock, - the featherweight object volleyed between opponents in the game of Badminton or Battledore.
A paradoxical anachronism, inspired by the great Mosque of Cordoba, renovated into a Renaissance cathedral.
Lantern Exterior- is a Florentine design that adorned the Municipal buildings of the Medici, appropriated by McKim Mead & White, for the Grand Masonic Lodge of New York.
Lantern Interior- appears as an infinite hypostyle hall like that of the Great Mosque of Cordoba prior to its renovation. The arches of this miniature hall are designed after the Mihrab, a singular arched niche that indicates the direction of Mecca. This Interior appears to be exponentially larger than the exterior, which encapsulates it. A miniature hall of mirrors with infinite passages to mecca alludes to the ideological paradox found in the confluence of Eastern & Western archetypes.

P.S.1, MOMA, GREATER NEWYORK EXHIBITION NYC, 2000
The10ft cable ship model suspended within in a 12 ft. illuminated acrylic capsule glazed with lenticular film is supported by funerary trestles, on a catafalque in a 25 feet tall x 22 feet long x12 feet wide pavilion. A century and a half ago the idea of a Trans Atlantic Telegraph was mocked much as time machines or interstellar travel are today. In1854, Cyrus WW. Field, a New England Industrialist, made the first attempt at laying a Trans-Atlantic cable. The mission was lost to some of the coldest and most inhospitable waters on Earth. The scale and detail of this model allows the viewer to empathize with the ship as fallen hero.

Æther Cabinet Experiment:

Wind tunnel designed to cultivate an ethereal, speleological bar graph charting the passage of time.

Appearing as a large incubator/ furnace this device burns Æther and pumps the ash-laden mist into the endless loop of the wind tunnels jet stream. The ash collects on the exhaust manifolds and forms horizontal excrescences in the form of stalactite and stalagmite structures. These geological formations are developing at an accelerated rate, allowing for a closer examination of their evolution. This devise exercises my interests in tampering with the passage of time.

F-Light Bed & F-Light Pillows, 1999
F-Light Bed & F-Light Pillows, 1999

F-LIGHT BED & F-LIGHT PILLOWS © are new concepts in programmable Illuminating sleeping equipment, both designed to guide and control it’s users circadian rhythms and dreams sequences. These cots and pillows apply a uniquely designed “intelligent” fabric, woven from two state -of –the-art materials; LiveWire, a electro-luminescent filament and Vectran, a liquid crystal polymer fiber. This “intelligent” fabric is programmed by timer and micro processor to illuminate and cycle with variable sequences, speeds, and intensities. These appliances have two principle modes of operation; Circadian Programming and Dream Sequencing, allow for these designs to have a broad array of applications in the field of sleep research.

The Circadian Programming mode is designed to help the sleeping subject gain control of their circadian rhythm. A subject’s circadian rhythm dictates when their body is either active or at rest. Daily sleeping schedules are generally dictated by the solar day. However, Airforce pilots, Astronauts and Intercontinental travelers, are often set out of sync with the solar day by routine time zone changes. The re-alignment and or correction of the circadian rhythm is most efficiently achieved through scheduled and controlled exposure to light.

When utilizing the circadian programming mode, The LIGHT BED or FLIGHT PILLOWS controls the on/off periods during which the “intelligent” fabric emanates light. These devices, function as silent Illuminated alarm clocks, or as supplementary light sources. The light bed is designed to meet military specifications and can serve in both training and field exercises as a silent reveille. The flight pillows are battery operated light weight compact, an ideal travel accessory for fighting jet lag on long intercontinental flights, as well as treating seasonal affected depression caused by dark winter months.

When using the Circadian Programming mode, both the Light Bed and the Flight Pillow are ideal for fighting fatigue, restoring alertness, and maximizing working and waking hour potential.

The Dream Sequencing mode is designed to help the sleeping subject evoke dreams of motion and flight during their R.E.M dream state. R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement) dreaming, also referred to as active dreaming, is the period in which the sleeper comes closest to consciousness and experiences vivid and life like dreams. R.E.M. occurs in regular and predictable intervals of a healthy sleepers daily rhythm. When in an R.E.M. dream state, a sleeper is sensitive and easily influenced by changes in their physical environment, i.e. sound, motion, temperature and light. Altering these conditions is found to influence the nature, and course of the sleepers dreams. Dreams of motion and flight can be installed in the mind of a sleeper by exposing the subject to patterns of sequenced light.

In the Dream Sequencing mode the “intelligent” fabric of the Light Bed and Flight Pillow generate a virtual experience of motion for the sleeper, by applying a chase sequence to the parallel lines of electroluminecent wire woven into their fabric. This sequence of subtly flashing lines of light generates an optical illusion similar to vector graphic flight simulators. These sequenced light patterns emanating from the “intelligent” fabric are visible through the closed eye lids of the subject. Upon sensing this illusion of motion, the subject (in the R.E.M. state) is induced into empowering dreams of self propelled flight, and progressive movement.

When used in the Dream Sequencing mode Both the LIGHT BED and the FLIGHT PILLOWS may be used for training; Airforce pilots, Astronauts and flight enthusiasts. These nocturnal simulations will serve as influential and enlightening exercises for the minds of soldiers and civilians alike.

PRINCIPAL MATERIALS

Both these designs; the LIGHT BED and FLIGHT PILLOWS, apply the use of technologies developed by the United States and Israeli Military industrial complexes.

Live Wire is the brand name for the electro-luminescent wire light source, a 16th inch diameter flexible cable that emanates light along its entire length and circumference.

This cable emits a cold light, much like the flat screen illuminated displays of hand held and laptop computers. This technology originally developed for the Israeli military, has recently been UL approved and made commercially available for public use.

Vectran is the brand name for fiber that composes the cots matrix into which the Live Wire is woven. Vectran is a light weight liquid crystal polymer that has extraordinary heat resistance and tensile strength (greater than that of Kevlar).

The unique properties of this high performance fiber satisfies many of today’s United states military and aerospace needs. For example, air bags woven out of Vectran were deployed to cushion the Pathfinder's landing on Mars in 1997. This fiber is also now commercially available to the public.

Extren is the brand name for tubing that composes the folding frame work of the Light Bed. Extren is a fiber glass and epoxy reinforced structural tubing that is corrosion resistant, nonconductive, and has a high strength to weight ratio (two thirds the weight of aluminum).

This structural material is commonly used for the construction of clean room and air craft equipment. Extren is also commercially available to the public.

DESIGNER’S NOTE

“The Conquest of the unconscious and the exploration and control of the mind are age old desires which may now be embarked upon with the aid of my new technology. This new technology designed for the enlightenment of man, has been woven from a matrix of technologies that were designed for mans destruction.

Beyond the marketable applications, and Utopic socio-political implications, these devices, which apply this new technology may also be appreciated as works of conceptual art & design which will encourage the viewer to romance the exploration of the ineffable and debate the ethics of the conquest of the subconscious. To date the unconscious mind still largely remains an un-chartered territory.

My intentions are for these inventions to serve as vehicles of exploration within this realm of the unknown.”

Transgenic Laureate 2000

TRANSGENIC LAUREATE (LAURUS NOBILIS)

Laurus Noblis is the true laurel of classical antiquity. The chosen plant of the Greek god Apollo, Laurel originated from the transubstantiation of Daphne, the woodland nymph whom metamorphosed into Laurel when fleeing Apollo’s amorous advances.
As with plant genealogies, the code of our own genome is being deciphered and the wondrous and frightening implications of genetic determinism are gathering momentum. The gift of genius and strength may soon be obtained by intentionally reconfiguring our genetic building blocks. Enlightenment may be achieved through the administration of regenerative medicine. The illuminati will be cultivated in the test tube not the temple. Scholastic study, trial, error and happenstance will be rendered obsolete means of determining the intellect. Laureation will occur as commonly as germination.

GENIUS WILL BE DESIGNED TO ORDER AND GROWN ON TREES.
